TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is one of the most important English language tests in the world, It is a standardized test to evaluate the English language ability and aptitude of non-native English speakers who wish to enrol in English-speaking universities. The TOEFL exam is conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS), which designs and regulates the test. The total TOEFL test score is between 0 and 120; its minimum acceptable score varies from institution to institution. Students can take the test any number of times they want, result of TOEFL exam is valid for two years after the test date. The TOEFL exam is 4 hours long, and there are many test centres in India.
TOEFL exam perfectly evaluates how well a student can read, listen, speak, and write in the English language in a college/university classroom. A good TOEFL score demonstrates your confidence and assures colleges that you have the necessary English communication skills to thrive in their academic environment. TOEFL exam scores are accepted worldwide. More than 12,000 colleges, universities, and other institutions in over 160 countries accept TOEFL scores. More universities and colleges recognize TOEFL scores than any other English-language test, and it is a fact that around 35 million people around the world have taken the TOEFL exam since its inception in 1964.
TOEFL exam is conducted in 3 different formats, students can choose the type of test that best suits their needs and preferences.
TOEFL iBT test: It is taken on a computer at an authorized TOEFL test center.
TOEFL iBT Paper Edition: It is a pen and paper-based test taken in 2 separate sessions:
(1) Reading, Listening, and Writing taken on paper at an authorized test center.
(2) Speaking on a computer at home in the presence of a human invigilator.
TOEFL iBT Home Edition: This format can be taken on a computer in the comfort of your home.
TOEFL iBT Test
The TOEFL iBT exam is designed to demonstrate student’s ability to use different English language skills like reading, writing, speaking and listening together. It assists in confirming your readiness to express your thoughts on what you read and hear in English during your academic studies. The TOEFL exam assesses your ability to effectively communicate in English for academic assignments through using reading and listening comprehension skills. In a normal TOEFL exam, you are expected to do the following English related tasks:
Read, listen and then speak in response to a question
Listen and then speak in response to a question
Read, listen and then write in response to a question
TOEFL iBT Exam Structure & Content
The TOEFL exam is divided into four sections reading, writing, speaking and listening and it is two hours long.
Reading: The reading portion of the TOEFL exam consists of two 700-word reading passages. There are ten questions in each of these multiple-focus passages, such as compare/contrast and cause/effect.
Timing for TOEFL reading section: 35 minutes
Scoring scale is 0–30
Listening: The TOEFL exam's listening section consists of three audio lectures, each lasting 3-5 minutes; some audios include a classroom discussion with six questions. There are also two human conversations, each lasting three minutes and containing five questions each.
Timing for TOEFL listening section: 36 minutes
Scoring scale is 0–30
Speaking: The speaking part of the TOEFL exam includes four tasks: three tasks are based on what is read and heard, and one task requires you to express your viewpoint on a well-known, familiar topic. You have 30 seconds to think of a response and up to one minute to respond.
Timing for TOEFL speaking section: 16 minutes
Scoring scale is 0–30
Writing: The writing part of the TOEFL exam consists of 2 tasks, a 20-minute task based on what is read and heard and a 10-minute writing assignment that requires you to express and defend a position in a live classroom discussion.
Timing for TOEFL writing section is 29 minutes
Scoring scale is 0–30
If you finish any of the four sections of the TOEFL test before the allotted time, you can always move on to the next section. However, once you have completed a section or the time limit for it has been reached, you will be unable to revisit or make changes to that section. Only within the reading section, you are allowed to go back to previous passages and questions and make changes, but only during the designated time of 35 minutes for the reading section.
In the TOEFL exam, the trick is that you should work quickly but carefully on the Reading and Listening section questions. Some questions are more difficult than others, but try to answer each one to the best of your ability. If you’re unsure of the answer to a question, you can make a guess, but you should definitely attempt the question.
Questions in the Speaking and Writing portions have separate time durations of 16 and 29 minutes, respectively. You have to answer each of these questions as completely as possible in the allotted time.
TOEFL Exam Scoring Criteria
The TOEFL exam score ranges from 0 to 30 for each section of the examination, with a total score of 120. Each score range is separated into proficiency levels, which test a student's English language ability. Academic institutions use not just the overall score but also the score information for each individual section. Each section's scores give a more comprehensive view and help differentiate one application from another. More than 12,500 institutions worldwide accepts the TOEFL score as a piece of reliable information about their applicants' English-language proficiency and their ability to succeed in the academic field.
